The Effects of NAFTA

Truck accidents in Texas are on the rise.  In fact, Texas accounts for almost 11% of all commercial vehicle accidents in 2007, and most of those commercial vehicles are large trucks.

While truck accidents have always posed problems across the United States, one relatively new issue is the connection between Texas tractor trailer wrecks and NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement). According to NAFTA safety statistics, of the 50,000 commercial motor vehicle accidents within the United States in 2007, 5,500 have occurred in Texas, many as a result of the increase in trucking traffic between Texas and Mexico.

A pilot program began in September 2007, when certain Mexican and U.S. trucking companies were allowed to drive 18-wheelers between the two countries.  As of August 2007, five Mexican companies with a total of 15 trucks, and three U.S. companies with a total of 30 trucks were approved for international hauls. More carriers will be approved as the program continues – and eventually up to 100 companies in each country will drive across our borders.

The problems occur when older Mexican trucks and tractor trailers drive on TX highways. They are often less safe than their large vehicle counterparts in the U.S.  These trucks travel across many Texas roadways, including I-20, I-35, I-10, I-45 and other interstates, and they are carrying heavy loads at high speeds.

Experts agree that tractor trailer wrecks and NAFTA are a deadly combination for TX roads and drivers, causing irreparable damage and loss of life.  If you are involved in a 18-wheeler accident in Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, or anywhere in the state of TX with a foreign truck, you should contact a law firm with experience not only in truck accidents, but with an extensive knowledge of NAFTA regulations and how they may impact your legal claim.
